REACH stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. REACH went into effect on June 1, 2007. Enterprises which manufacture or import more than one ton of a chemical substance per year will be required to register this substance in a central database administered by the new EU Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki.
EuP stands for energy-using products. The EuP Directive provides a basis for the integration of environmental aspects in product design and development of energy-using products. The Directive does not introduce directly binding requirements for specific products but does define conditions and criteria for setting requirements regarding environmentally relevant product characteristics (such as energy consumption).
ISO 14001 is a voluntary international standard that establishes requirements for an environmental management system (EMS). The ISO 14001 environmental mangagement standards exist to help organizations integrate the EMS into business management practices. Setting up environmental management systems help companies minimize how their operations negatively affect the environment. All Toshiba PC company productions plants are ISO 14001 certified.
The European Commission signed a contract with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to promote the ENERGY STAR Programme for office equipment in the European Union as well. Toshiba Europe GmbH is a registered partner of the European Community ENERGY STAR Programme.
Toshiba has developed an original "Power-saving Utility" making the best of the ACPI capabilities for our laptop PCs. The "Power-saving Utility" offers four power saving modes that enable the PC to accurately control CPU processing speed, LCD luminosity, and pausing of hard disk drives and LCD power OFF when not operating, depending on how the PC is used or on how much battery power is left.
The Standard ECMA 370 known as "The Eco Declaration" specifies environmental attributes and measurement methods for ICT and CE products according to known regulations, standards, guidelines and currently accepted practices.
RoHS stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. The RoHS EU Directive restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment. The RoHS EU Directive aims to reduce the use of substances that may pose risks to human health or the environment. As of July 1, 2006, most new electrical and electronic equipment cannot be sold in the EU if they contain the following substances above specified concentrations (w/w) at the homogeneous material level:
  • Lead (0.1%)
  • Mercury (0.1%)
  • Cadmium (0.01%)
  • Hexavalent chromium (0.1%)
  • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1%)
  • Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1%)
