Toshiba Plymouth has won the award for best sustainable waste management solution at the 2008 Severnside Annual Recycling Awards held in February 2008
The achievements of organisations, who have embraced the green agenda with their efforts to develop sustainable recycling and waste management systems, were at the Severnside Annual Recycling Awards 2008, held at the Millennium Stadium on 21 February 2008.
There were six categories of award with three companies short listed in each category. The Woodland Trust provided dedicated pieces of national woodland areas to each category winner.
Matthew Prosser, Commercial Director of Severnside Recycling, said: “Just about every element of our society is demanding that businesses take responsibility for reducing their impact on the environment. Legislation is also demanding that we do this, but this is not the only factor driving the green agenda.
“A realisation of the wider environmental effect of our actions, allied with consumer pressure and the economic principals of a better environmental performance all combine to produce the step change we are experiencing today.
“The awards recognise the achievements of organisation that have embraced that step change.”
Award for Best Overall Sustainable Waste Management Solution
Toshiba Information Systems (UK) Ltd: Toshiba has demonstrated what many see as the bedrock of any overall sustainable waste management solution, the ability to take a completely holistic, 360 degree view of their business practices to asses its environmental impact. This has meant an overhaul of everything from waste production through to energy purchasing
Realising the importance of the waste hierarchy and after considering how to limit their waste reduction Toshiba looked at the next stage, Re-use. In June last year they developed a returnable packaging scheme and by September over 1000 tonnes of packaging had been returned to suppliers for re-use.
Moving on to recycling, Toshiba has in 4 years through its varied recycling schemes including cardboard, EPS, plastics, wood, metal, PCBs, LCDs, Sets and CRTs has increased recycling tonnages from 625 tonnes to around 3500 per year
The other nominees short listed for this award were the Ministry of Defence and Kimberley Clark.
